I’m Liz Nameth and this is my crochet blog. I love crochet. Ever since I can remember I have been enchanted with the craft process. Over the years I have dabbled in many different types of crafts but I always come back to crochet. There is something deeply satisfying about taking a raw material – whether it be yarn, fabric, paper, or even a plastic grocery bag – and turning it into something beautiful. Of course, that urge to do it myself frequently spills over into other areas of my life. I have been known to make kombucha, water kefir, and can or freeze a lot of my own food. When I got married nine years ago, I made all of the flowers, invitations, centerpieces, and church decorations. It’s like an obsession, one I have been hooked on (I love crochet puns) my entire life.
So what does that life look like? I live in a little house on a quiet side road named Pelham Street – thus the name of my blog. My Little House on Pelham is in Rhinelander, a small town in Northern Wisconsin. I love where I live, and I cannot imagine living anywhere else. I am in the city limits yet I am surrounded by woods. I have a huge yard with four apple trees. I’m in the process of creating a large garden, and I hope to be adding chickens soon. I have had deer, owl, bear, and even a very large turtle in my yard. I am about an hour south of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, two hours southeast of Lake Superior, two hours northwest of Lake Michigan, and four hours north of Milwaukee. (I have been told that measuring distances by time instead of miles in a Wisconsin thing. What can I say? I am a Wisconsin woman. LOL) (GO PACK GO!!!)
I share this wonderful little slice of heaven with my husband, Dave, and our two cats, Tiger and Sheldon. And, yes, Sheldon was named after the Big Bang Theory. I have two children, Evan, who is 25, and Adam, who was 17 when he passed away in 2011. I have a three year old grandson, Camryn, that I absolutely adore. That little boy has me wrapped around his little finger. He is the center of my universe and he knows it.
Over the years I have worked as an office manager in the car business, a mortgage banker, and a homeschooling mom. Right now I am a full-time college student studying Web Software Development at my local technical college. It has been an interesting challenge going to school full-time at age 48 but I love it. Getting a degree has been on my bucket list for a long time. What better field to study than something that will help me build a successful blog!
My goal with this blog is for it to be the ultimate expression of everything crochet. I have spent several years trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. One time I even went through this book whose goal was to help you figure out your superpower. I realized that there are three things that fill me up besides my family – reading, taking care of plants and animals, and creating something beautiful. Note that my definition of beautiful includes the beauty of a freezer full of vegetables I grew myself. Making something with my own two hands is a spiritual experience for me. This much I know. As far as knowing what I want to be when I grow up, I still really have no clue. I do know that, when I am not crafting, I am spending an awful lot of time on Etsy and Pinterest collecting craft ideas, patterns, and eye candy for a color lover like myself. I thought I had best figure out how to make that time productive lest my husband turn off the internet and confiscate my smartphone. 😛
